About Sidi Kaouki

Sidi Kaouki is a small fishing and surf village on the Atlantic coast, about 25 km south of Essaouira. It takes its name from Sidi Kaouki, a holy man whose white marabout stands on the rocks at the northern end of the beach. For generations families have come to the shrine to ask for the saint's blessing, and the small white building is still the landmark of the village.

The village is little more than a few streets of guesthouses, cafés and fish restaurants behind a beach that runs for kilometres towards the south. There are no big hotels and no nightlife: people come for the space, the light and the ocean, and many stay far longer than they planned.

Surf, kitesurf and windsurf

Sidi Kaouki is one of the best-known wind and wave spots in Morocco. The trade wind, the alizé, blows strongly from spring to the end of summer and makes the bay a favourite of kitesurfers and windsurfers. In autumn and winter, when the wind drops, the Atlantic swells bring good waves for surfers of every level. Several schools on the beach rent boards and wetsuits and give lessons.

Camels, horses and walks on the beach

Camel and horse rides leave from the beach every day, along the sand towards the dunes and the cliffs to the south. At low tide the beach is wide and firm, and a walk to the end of the bay at sunset is one of the simple pleasures of a stay here.

Argan country

Inland, the village is surrounded by argan forest, the tree that only grows in this part of Morocco. Goats climb into the branches to eat the fruit, and the women's cooperatives on the road to Essaouira show how argan oil is pressed by hand and sell it directly.

Good to know before you go

• Shops are few and basic: bring cash, as card payment is not common in the village.
• The wind can be strong and the water cold all year: a wetsuit is used even in summer.
• Guesthouses are spread along tracks behind the beach. Give us the name of yours and the driver takes you to the door.
• Sidi Kaouki is the closest beach to Essaouira Airport, about 15 minutes away.

Sidi Kaouki to Essaouira and Essaouira Airport

The taxi from Sidi Kaouki to Essaouira takes about 30 minutes on the road through the argan trees, and the driver leaves you at Bab Sbaa or Bab Marrakech, the gates closest to the riads of the medina. Essaouira Airport is on the way, only 15 minutes from the beach.

Sidi Kaouki to Marrakech and Marrakech Airport

The taxi from Sidi Kaouki to Marrakech takes about 3 hours by Essaouira and the road across the plain. On the way, the driver can stop in the Agafay desert for lunch or a night in a camp.

Sidi Kaouki to Imsouane, Taghazout and Agadir

To the south, the coast road goes through argan hills to Imsouane and its long wave, about 1 h 30 away, then to the surf villages of Taghazout and Tamraght, and to Agadir and Agadir Airport. Surfers often book the whole coast in one trip, with boards on the roof or in a minivan.

Sidi Kaouki to Casablanca and Rabat

For a flight from Casablanca Airport or a stay in Casablanca, the taxi from Sidi Kaouki takes about 4 h 30 by the motorway. Rabat is about 5 hours. We plan a stop for lunch on the way.
