Marrakech International Marathon: airport taxi and transfers

What is the Marrakech International Marathon?

The Marrakech International Marathon has been run since 1987 and is known for its flat, fast course. Thousands of runners from Morocco and abroad take part in the marathon and the half-marathon, on a flat course along the ramparts, the palm grove and the wide avenues of the city.

When it takes place

Time of the year: late January, on a Sunday. Length: one morning. The organisers announce the exact dates and the programme of each edition: check them on the official site of the event before you book flights and rooms, then book the transfer for the same dates.

Where it takes place in Marrakech

The start and the finish are in the centre of the new town, and the course goes round the medina walls, through the Palmeraie and back by Avenue Mohammed VI. The race village, where runners collect their bib, opens on the days before the race.

Getting to Marrakech for the Marrakech International Marathon

Marrakech Menara Airport is about 6 km from the centre. With the taxi from Marrakech Airport to the city, the driver waits in the arrivals hall with your name and takes you to your hotel or riad in about 15 minutes, from 19 € per car. See the transfer to your own hotel on the Marrakech hotels page. When flights to Marrakech are full on event dates, visitors land at Casablanca Airport or Agadir Airport and come by road. During your stay the same drivers take you around Marrakech and bring you back at night.

By road from the other cities, per car and one way:

• Essaouira to Marrakech: 65 €.
• Casablanca to Marrakech: 115 €.
• Agadir to Marrakech: 105 €.
• Marrakech to the Agafay desert: 49 €.

On the days of the event

On race morning many avenues are closed from early morning until about midday, including parts of Avenue Mohammed VI and the road round the ramparts. A transfer to the airport that morning needs more time and another way: tell us you travel on race day and the driver plans the route. Runners staying outside the centre should be dropped near the start before the roads close.

Good to know

• Runners: book the car to the start for the hour the organisers give, and a return for early afternoon, when the avenues reopen.
• A flight home on race Sunday? Leave the hotel about an hour earlier than usual.
• Many runners rest the next day in the Ourika valley, in Imlil or in the Agafay desert: the same driver can take you.
