What is the Printemps Musical des Alizés?
The Printemps Musical des Alizés is the classical music festival of Essaouira. Since 2001 it has offered chamber music, lyric singing and young soloists for a long spring weekend, with most concerts free of charge.
When it takes place
Time of the year: spring, usually late April or May. Length: four days. The organisers announce the exact dates and the programme of each edition: check them on the official site of the event before you book flights and rooms, then book the transfer for the same dates.
Where it takes place in Essaouira
The concerts are given at Dar Souiri, the cultural house of the medina, and in other rooms and courtyards inside the walls.
Getting to Essaouira for the Printemps Musical des Alizés
Most visitors land at Marrakech Menara Airport and continue by road. The taxi from Marrakech Airport to Essaouira takes about 2 h 45 for 190 km and costs from 65 € per car: the driver waits in the arrivals hall with your name and takes you to your address in Essaouira, or to the nearest gate if you stay inside the medina. If you land at Essaouira Airport, the transfer to the town takes 20 minutes. Flights to Agadir Airport and Casablanca Airport are the other two ways in.

On the days of the event
All the venues are inside the medina, where cars do not enter. The driver stops at Bab Sbaa, a few minutes on foot from Dar Souiri. The town is calm in spring and there are no road closures.
Good to know
- Places are limited and given on a first-come basis. For an afternoon concert, leave Marrakech in the morning.
- Spring is also the season of the trade wind, the alizé that gives the festival its name: bring a windbreaker for the ramparts.
