What is the Marrakech International Film Festival?

The Marrakech International Film Festival (FIFM) has been held since 2001. It shows a competition of first and second films, tributes to great names of world cinema and public conversations with directors and actors, and it brings well-known guests to the red carpet every evening.

When it takes place

Time of the year: late November or early December. Length: nine days. The organisers announce the exact dates and the programme of each edition: check them on the official site of the event before you book flights and rooms, then book the transfer for the same dates.

Where it takes place in Marrakech

The official screenings and the red carpet are at the Palais des Congrès, in Hivernage. Free open-air screenings are given on Jemaa el-Fna square, and other screenings take place in cinemas of Gueliz and at the Yves Saint Laurent museum.

Getting to Marrakech for the Marrakech International Film Festival

Marrakech Menara Airport is about 6 km from the centre. With the taxi from Marrakech Airport to the city, the driver waits in the arrivals hall with your name and takes you to your hotel or riad in about 15 minutes, from 19 € per car. During your stay the same drivers take you around Marrakech and bring you back at night.

By road from the other cities, per car and one way:

• Essaouira to Marrakech: 65 €.
• Casablanca to Marrakech: 115 €.
• Agadir to Marrakech: 105 €.
• Marrakech to the Agafay desert: 49 €.

On the days of the event

Around the Palais des Congrès, Boulevard Mohammed VI is partly closed or slowed in the evening for the red carpet, and security checks cars near the entrance. The driver leaves you at the closest open point, a few minutes on foot. Hotels in Hivernage fill up with guests and press, so traffic there is heavier than usual.

Good to know

• Landing during the festival? The airport is busier than usual in the evening. Give your flight number so the driver follows the landing time.
• Screenings on Jemaa el-Fna start after dark. The square is closed to cars: the driver stops near the Koutoubia.
• Evenings are cold in Marrakech in late November. Take a coat for the open-air screenings.
